A core team to pilot UW-Madison's application was established in March 2008 to respond to Carnegie Foundation's Call for Participation. The application for Community Engagement classification also served as the basis for a section of UW-Madison's reaccreditation core criteria.

Timeline:
- Carnegie issues invitation to institutions in January 2008
- UW-Madison response core team established in March 2008
- application process opens April 1, 2008
- core team conducts interviews and developments a first draft, April and May
- first draft finished May 30, available for review and comment period from June 4-20
- revision period June 20-July 11
- final draft finished July 12, available for review and comment from July 12-25
- draft of application completed by August 4, 2008
- final documents submitted on August 29, 2008
- Carnegie Foundation notified UW-Madison that that it was awarded Community Engagement status, December 18, 2008
